The Windsor Spitfires are not taking a quick path to a division title.

Mathematically, a West Division crown seems inevitable for the Spitfires, but back-to-back road losses kept the club from accomplishing the feat on the weekend.

The Spitfires trailed by four goals and could not complete a comeback bid on Sunday in a 5-4 road loss to the Ottawa 67’s, who are outside the playoff picture in the Eastern Conference. It followed a 4-2 road loss to the Kingston Frontenacs on Friday.

On Sunday, Ottawa jumped to a 2-0 lead on goals by Will Gerrior and Bradley Horner before J.C. Lemieux got Windsor on the board, but the 67’s countered that just 27 seconds later on a goal by Filip Ekberg to give the 67’s a 3-1 lead after the opening period.

Chase Yannie and Luca Pinelli pushed the 67’s lead to 5-1 and chased Windsor starting goalie Joey Costanzo.

Luke McNamara, who had both goals for Windsor against Kingston, Liam Greentree and Ilya Prots scored in the final five minutes of the second period, including two in the final minute, but the Spitfires could not find the equalizer in a scoreless third period despite outshooting Ottawa 40-19 overall and 12-3 in the final period.

Despite the two losses, Windsor still holds 14-point lead on second-place Saginaw for top spot in the West Division with eight games left in the regular season.

Titans drop Express

The Windsor Express slipped back into third place in the Basketball Super League after a 113-99 road loss to the Kitchener-Waterloo Titans on Sunday.

Windsor led by seven points after the first quarter and by two points at the break, but the Titans outscored the Express by 16 points in the third quarter and never looked back.

Vincent Boumann had 28 points and 15 rebounds for the Express (14-7). Latin Davis finished with 25 points and Zavier Turner came off the bench to score 21 points against the Titans (15-7).

Sweet Vipers win

The LaSalle Vipers locked up the sixth seed in the Western Conference in the Greater Ontario Junior Hockey League with a 5-3 win over the seventh-place Elmira Sugar Kings on Sunday.

Bryce Belleau, Jak Thiessen, Connor Chartrand, Zach Vaillancourt and Julian Gignac scored singles goals for the Vipers (29-19-1-0) against the Sugar Kings (25-19-4-0).

Admirals eliminate Sharks

The Amherstburg Admirals rallied from the brink of elimination to advance to the second round of the Bill Stobbs Division playoffs in the Provincial Junior Hockey League.

Amherstburg took the seventh and deciding game of the best-of-seven series by a 7-4 count on the road against the Wheatley Sharks on Sunday after earning a 4-3 overtime win on Saturday in Game 6 at home.

On Sunday, Jake Goudreault, Rory Sandison, Finnigan Russett, Tyler Vriesema, Wyatt Goudie, Drew Booker and Brady Drouillard scored single goals for the fifth-seeded Admirals. Josh Chauvin scored three goals for the fourth-seeded Sharks and Kyle Bleau and the other.

On Saturday, Ryan Clark’s power-play goal at 6:30 of overtime allowed the Admirals to even the series at 3-3. Dallas Kelly, Sandison and Goudie also scored for the Admirals, who will face the top-seeded Essex 73’s in the semis. Stefan Jacobs, Kyle Bleau and Joshua Bleau scored for the Sharks.

The second-seeded Lakeshore Canadiens will face the Blenheim Blades, who eliminated Mooretown in six games, in the other semifinal.

Lancer men’s hockey

The Toronto Varsity Blues completed a series sweep of the Windsor Lancers on Saturday.

Toronto’s 4-2 win over the Lancers gave the Blues a 2-0 win in the best-of-three West Division semifinal series.

Logan Linklater had the Lancers on the board first, but Toronto countered with three-unanswered goals. Dylan Shives made it a one-goal game in the third period, but the Variety Blues sealed the win with an empty-net goal.

Lancer women’s basketball

The Windsor Lancers were bounced from the OUA women’s basketball playoffs on Saturday after a 81-53 road loss to the Ottawa Gee Gees in semifinal play.

Vanessa Budimunda had 14 points for the Lancers while Julia Chiarot and Harriet Carey each added 13 points.
