Min Woo Lee has fired a scintillating five-under par 31 on the front nine to launch into early contention at The Players Championship.

The 26-year-old Australian, who was in the final pairing with eventual winner Scottie Scheffler in 2023, made the turn with five birdies and no bogeys to fire a warning to his rivals.

Lee sits one shot back of leader Lucas Glover on -6.

It’s been a mixed day for the other Australians in the field. Jason Day was forced to withdraw from the tournament with illness while Cam Davis shot a disappointing four-over par 76.

Adam Scott started strongly with an early birdie on the second hole before dropping shots on three and six to sit at +1.

Aussie rookie Karl Vilips, who secured his place at The Players with a maiden PGA Tour victory at the Puerto Rico Open last week, has started well to sit at —1.

Elsewhere, defending champions Scheffler is firmly in the mix at -3 mid way through his opening round. The world No.1 is in the marquee grouping with Rory McILroy (-2) and Xander Schuaffele (-1).
